...jako syn narodu niemieckiego – syn tego narodu, nad którym grupa zbrodniarzy zdobyła władzę przez zwodnicze obietnice wielkości, przywrócenia honoru i znaczenia narodowi, roztaczając perspektywy dobrobytu, ale też stosując terror i zastraszenie, by posłużyć się narodem jako narzędziem swojej żądzy zniszczenia i panowania. Tak, nie mogłem tu nie przybyć. 7 czerwca 1979 roku jako Arcybiskup Monachium-Fryzyngi byłem tu wśród wielu biskupów, którzy towarzyszyli Janowi Pawłowi II, słuchali go i modlili się z nim. W 1980 roku powróciłem raz jeszcze na to miejsce zbrodni z delegacją biskupów niemieckich, poruszony ogromem zła i wdzięczny za to, że nad tymi ciemnościami zabłysła gwiazda pojednania. Dlatego też jestem tu dziś: aby prosić o łaskę pojednania – aby prosić przede wszystkim Boga, bo tylko On może otworzyć i oczyścić ludzkie serca; ale również ludzi, którzy tu cierpieli. Modlę się o dar pojednania wszystkich, którzy w tej godzinie naszych dziejów wciąż cierpią pod panowaniem nienawiści i przemocy zrodzonej przez nienawiść....

Papst Johannes Paul II. stand hier als Kind des Volkes, das neben dem jüdischen Volk am meisten an diesem Ort und überhaupt im Laufe des Krieges hat leiden müssen: „6 Millionen Polen haben ihr Leben während des Zweiten Weltkriegs verloren, ein Fünftel der Nation“, sagte der Papst damals erinnernd. Er hat hier den Mahnruf zur Achtung der Rechte des Menschen und der Nationen erhoben, den zuvor seine Vorgänger Johannes XXIII. und Paul VI. vor der Welt erhoben hatten, und hat hinzugefügt: „Ich verkündige diese Rechte als Sohn der Nation, die in ihrer entfernten und jüngeren Geschichte vielfältige Qualen durch andere erlitten hat. Ich sage dies nicht, um anzuklagen, sondern um zu erinnern. Ich spreche im Namen aller Nationen, deren Rechte verletzt und vergessen werden…“

...Papst Johannes Paul II. stand hier als Sohn des polnischen Volkes. Ich stehe hier als Sohn des deutschen Volkes, und gerade deshalb muß ich, darf ich wie er sagen: Ich konnte unmöglich nicht hierherkommen. Ich mußte kommen. Es war und ist eine Pflicht der Wahrheit, dem Recht derer gegenüber, die gelitten haben, eine Pflicht vor Gott, als Nachfolger von Johannes Paul II. und als Kind des deutschen Volkes hier zu stehen – als Sohn des Volkes, über das eine Schar von Verbrechern mit lügnerischen Versprechungen, mit der Verheißung der Größe, des Wiedererstehens der Ehre der Nation und ihrer Bedeutung, mit der Verheißung des Wohlergehens und auch mit Terror und Einschüchterung Macht gewonnen hatte, so daß unser Volk zum Instrument ihrer Wut des Zerstörens und des Herrschens gebraucht und mißbraucht werden konnte....

W istocie, bezwzględni zbrodniarze, unicestwiając ten naród, zamierzali zabić Boga, który powołał Abrahama, a przemawiając na Górze Synaj, ustanowił zasadnicze kryteria postępowania ludzkości, obowiązujące na wieki. Skoro ten naród, przez sam fakt swojego istnienia stanowi świadectwo Boga, który przemówił do człowieka i wziął go pod swoją opiekę, to trzeba było, aby Bóg umarł, a cała władza spoczęła w rękach ludzi – w rękach tych, którzy uważali się za mocnych i chcieli zawładnąć światem. Wyniszczając Izrael, dokonując Szoah, chcieli w rzeczywistości wyrwać korzenie wiary chrześcijańskiej i zastąpić ją przez siebie stworzoną wiarą w panowanie człowieka – człowieka mocnego.

Jest tu także tablica z napisem w języku polskim. W pierwszej fazie starano się wyeliminować przede wszystkim inteligencję, by w ten sposób zlikwidować naród jako samodzielny podmiot historyczny, aby sprowadzić go, o ile wciąż będzie istniał, do poziomu niewolników. Do szczególnej refleksji pobudza też tablica w języku Sinti i Romów. Również ten lud, wędrujący pośród innych narodów, został skazany na zagładę. W ideologii, w której liczył się tylko zysk wymierny, a wszystko inne, według niej, uważane było za lebensunwertes Leben – życiebezwartościowe, naród ten uważany był za niepotrzebny element historii powszechnej. Jest też tablica w języku rosyjskim, upamiętniająca ogromną liczbę żołnierzy rosyjskich, którzy polegli w walce z reżimem narodowosocjalistycznym. Rodzi się tu równocześnie refleksja nad tragizmem ich misji: wyzwalali narody spod jednej dyktatury, poddawali je nowej dyktaturze – dyktaturze Stalina i ideologii komunistycznej, która narzucała tym narodom swoją władzę.

Deep down, those vicious criminals, by wiping out this people, wanted to kill the God who called Abraham, who spoke on Sinai and laid down principles to serve as a guide for mankind, principles that are eternally valid. If this people, by its very existence, was a witness to the God who spoke to humanity and took us to himself, then that God finally had to die and power had to belong to man alone - to those men, who thought that by force they had made themselves masters of the world. By destroying Israel, by the Shoah, they ultimately wanted to tear up the taproot of the Christian faith and to replace it with a faith of their own invention: faith in the rule of man, the rule of the powerful.

Then there is the inscription in Polish. First and foremost they wanted to eliminate the cultural elite, thus erasing the Polish people as an autonomous historical subject and reducing it, to the extent that it continued to exist, to slavery. Another inscription offering a pointed reminder is the one written in the language of the Sinti and Roma people. Here too, the plan was to wipe out a whole people which lives by migrating among other peoples. They were seen as part of the refuse of world history, in an ideology which valued only the empirically useful; everything else, according to this view, was to be written off as lebensunwertes Leben - life unworthy of being lived. There is also the inscription in Russian, which commemorates the tremendous loss of life endured by the Russian soldiers who combated the Nazi reign of terror; but this inscription also reminds us that their mission had a tragic twofold effect: they set the peoples free from one dictatorship, but the same peoples were thereby subjected to a new one, that of Stalin and the Communist system.
